READING

Reading fluently means reading with understanding, at an acceptable speed and with expression, if the extract is to be read aloud. In order to read with expression, the content as well as the form and context of the extract needs to be understood. In our rapidly changing world, people also need to be able to read with insight and make assessments of different reading material, for example, newspapers, novels, comics, magazines, films, reference material, and even websites. Reading with insight translates into engaging with printed and digital material at both an intellectual and an emotional level – evaluating and appraising the information that is being presented.

BOHE is aware that people need to be able to read fluently in order to engage with our world. For this reason, the lessons in the reading section include the following:

·        The structure of sentences

·        The use of punctuation marks

·        Emotive language used to manipulate people

·        The difference between facts and opinions

·        The use of figurative language

·        Stereotypes

·        Different registers in different contexts

·        Different forms and templates used in writing

In addition to the above BOHE has included a section on Embracing Literature, in which different genres of writing are examined and assessed. This includes the writing of Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and even Charles Dickens.

There are numerous benefits to this course including:

·        Exposure to different genres of writing

·        Examining register and style in different writing

·        Developing a sensitivity to writers’ intentions

·        Assessing the impact of sentence construction and punctuation

·        Evaluating writing in the media

·        Identifying a writer’s voice and intention

·        Understanding business terminology and expression

·        Identifying techniques of rhetoric
